چکیده

Ultra-pure ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid (ethyl-EPA), a semi-synthetic ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid, is associated with clinical improvement in motor functioning in Huntington's disease. The aim was to determine the extent to which it might reduce the rate of progress of cerebral atrophy. High-resolution cerebral magnetic resonance imaging scans were acquired at baseline, 6 months and 1 year in up to 34 patients with stage I or II Huntington's disease who took part in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of ethyl-EPA. For each subject and each pair of structural images, the two-timepoint brain volume change was calculated in a double-blind manner. Significant group-level reductions in brain atrophy were observed in the head of the caudate nucleus and the posterior thalamus. These findings show that treatment with ethyl-EPA is associated with significant reduction in brain atrophy, particularly in the caudate and thalamus. No other drug tested in Huntington's disease has shown this effect.

EPA and Huntington's chorea: treatment and associated cerebral changes

Huntington’s disease (Huntington’s chorea) is an autosomal dominant disease of the human brain caused by an unstable expansion of CAG trinucleotide triplet repeats in the huntingtin gene at 4p16.3; the CAG repeats are transcribed and translated into polyglutamine expansion (polyQ) stretches, and the length of the repeats correlates inversely with age of onset. Huntington’s disease is characteri...

Serum Eicosapentaenoic and Arachidonic Acids Concentration and Cognitive Function in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

Introduction: Recent studies have shown that Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs), including Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), and Arachidonic Acid (AA), are associated with cognitive functions in patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Nevertheless, controversial results have been reported, too. The current study aimed to clarify the association of serum EPA and AA levels with cognitive decline...

Behavioral study of effects of mesenchymal stem cells transplant on motor deficits improvement in animal model of Huntington\'s disease

Introduction: As an inherited neurodegenerative disease, Huntington's disease is accompanied with wide neuronal degeneration in neostriatum and neocortex. Progress of the disease causes disabling clinical effects on movements, recognition and physiology of the body, and finally results in death. At this stage of knowledge we are, there is no effective therapeutic strategy for diminishing the mo...

Randomized, placebo-controlled study of ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid as supplemental treatment in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE The study investigated the efficacy and tolerability of ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid (E-EPA) as add-on treatment in chronic, severe schizophrenia. METHOD A randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled, fixed-dose, add-on study was conducted over 12 weeks. Forty patients with persistent symptoms after at least 6 months of stable antipsychotic treatment received E-EPA o...
